By Brandie Tarvin - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:05 AM I have been asked to find data modeling tools to serve as an alternative to Computer Associate's Erwin. I downloaded Toad version 3 to test it, but it doesn't allow me to import.er1 model diagrams. Does anyone know of decent alternatives to Erwin which will allow me to import our current Erwin diagrams without having to rebuild them from scratch? I want a tool that will do all the same sorts of things Erwin does. Reverse Engineering, Complete Compare, list datatypes in tables, as well as relationships, etc. Including being able to color-code tables (background and outline colors). Thanks in advance!
By Steve Jones - SSC Editor - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:30 AM Visio will work, but it's a little flaky and that' s not it's intended purpose. Embarkadero has ER/Studio, which I liked better than Erwin. By Grant Fritchey - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 3:55 AM Put me down for Embarcadero ERStudio too. By Brandie Tarvin - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 4:45 AM I just downloaded a trial version of this and it won't open any of my current Erwin diagrams. It seems nothing I can find will allow me to simply convert over my current diagrams. Any other suggestions?
By Grant Fritchey - Tuesday, January 29, 2008 4:57 AM Really? That actually used to be a specialty of theirs because they were bringing so many people over from ERWin. I haven't upgraded an ERWin model myself since 2002.
What about exporting to XML or something & importing that way? By Brandie Tarvin - Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:11 AM Actually, my problem may be resolved. I thought we weren't going to be able to get the latest version of Erwin, but now I'm hearing differently. Here's hoping! @=) By KenpoDBA - Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:20 AM Y, ERStudio is the bomb. I used to convert ERWin diagrams with it all the time. I don't imagine that they would have lost that functionality.

Before the year ends, here's a twerkable bootleg remix I did for quite possibly my favorite Daft Punk song called 'Prime Time Of Your Life'. I journeyed into different subgenres of EDM, met a bunch of new people, and overall improved enormously on the music I produce, this being a prime example. I'd like to thank all of you listeners for making 2013 a good year for me. Perkujtime per te vdekurit per gjyshin year.
Almost everything in ERStudio is easier than ERWin too. By Brandie Tarvin - Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:27 AM What version are you guys using that ER/Studio converts Erwin? And what type of files have you saved in Erwin that makes the conversion so easy? When I tried to convert an.er1 diagram, it didn't work for me at all. By Lynn Pettis - Thursday, January 31, 2008 3:13 AM We are currently running ERStudio version 7.1.2 Build 4769, and it supports converting ERWin ERX files from version 2.6 through 3.52. There is a newer version of ERStudio out, but we haven't done the upgrade as of yet. By Ewan Hampson - Thursday, January 31, 2008 7:29 PM Visio has always seemed OK for SQL Server, but since we also work with Oracle we have been moving towards ERWin. Do those with experience of both find that ERStudio is actually better than ERWin across database platforms, or is it simply that we all prefer the one we have got used to? By Brandie Tarvin - Friday, February 1, 2008 12:34 AM IMHO, both are better than Visio.
Visio just doesn't have the toolset to do all the things I want it to do. I've only looked at ER/Studio for about 5 minutes trying to see if it would convert my ancient Erwin diagram. Since it didn't and since we may be able to upgrade our Erwin, I quit looking at it.
