Ghost's ability to restore an image that was created by a different Ghost version depends mainly on the Ghost versions involved. In addition, this ability sometimes depends on the options that were used to create the image.

My computer's HD failed, and I am trying to restore it (with a new HD) to the point at which it left the 'factory'. This computer was sent to me from my company and a copy of the original image was included on a separate drive. The computer also shipped with Norton Ghost 12.0but the disk image is from a previous version of Ghost, I think. The extensions on the backed up image is.GHO. When I try to use the Norton Ghost CD to restore the image it does not recognize it, and appears to be looking for.v2i files.

So can I restore images from GHO file in Norton 12? An alternative would be to use a bootable USB from the previous version of GHOST. I received a copy of one which I was told was from the same version of Ghost that made the factory images. When I try to use it to boot, I get an error saying there is an error detected on the hard disk.

I guess because it is either not bootable or has been corrupted - I think they just copied the contents of one bootable disk to another USB drive. Would that work? If so, is there a specific configuration needed, autoexec.bat/config.sys for example?

Thanks for any help. Okie Dokie, more research shows that you can't get Ghost 12 to work with the.GHO images (how annoying both by Symantec and my company). So I got the Norton 2003 bootable USB running. Here is what I needed: 1) Download and install the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (, among other places. 2) Get some copy of an MS-DOS type boot disk. This is easy to do if you have a floppy drive.

I don't (frustrating - 6 computers, 0 floppies). So I had to download one.

The one from on the left side, labeled 'System files boot floppy' worked just fine. 3) Get a copy of the Ghost bootable disk drive. Radified Files has a copy of this, as well - without the GHOST.exe so you will need access to Ghost 2003 either way. What that download gives you is all the associated config files (which were broken on the copy I previously had). You can also generate one using the Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard. Having those three pieces, I installed a fresh USB drive and: 1) Unzip the 'System files boot floppy' to a known location 2) Run the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool.

Select the proper USB drive, check the 'create a DOS startup disk' option. Select the 'using DOS system files located at:' and navigate to the unzipped 'System files boot floppy'. 3) When that is done, copy the contents of the Ghost boot floppy onto the root directory of the USB, then retrieved a copy of the Ghost.exe (produced by the Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard) and put it into the GHOST director on the USB. The drive was then bootable into Ghost 2003, and I could restore the GHO files. The drive was then bootable into Ghost 2003, and I could restore the GHO files. Very clever and inventive of you to work all this out! Thanks for reporting back with your solution--helps us all learn. Element tv monitor drivers download.

If you are still monitoring this thread, I know that for Ghost 9 and Ghost 10, the bootable Ghost Recovery disc (aka--the installation disc), there was a utility program labeled something to the effect of *Restore Legacy Ghost Image*. As you clearly indicated, Ghost 12 was looking for *.v2i* files--the same as used by Ghost 9 and Ghost 10. And your *.gho* files required Ghost 2003, or Ghost 8.xx, or Ghost 11.xx.

The *legacy* program that could restore *.gho* files using the Ghost 9 or 10 Recovery CD was named *RESTOREGHOST.EXE*. It is actually the *Ghost32.exe* program from the Corporate Ghost 8.xx and 11.xx which is the Ghost program *ported* to run under various versions of Windows--i.e. It's not a DOS based program--but a Windows based program. I think that program was *dropped* from the Ghost 12 Recovery CD--you could do a search on the CD for the RESTOREGHOST.EXE program to see if it's still there--I'd be interested to know!
